Raks Jaded

Raks Jaded is a four member ensemble of dancers based in Sudbury, Ontario. Drawing from a tradition of belly dancing and adding new elements from alternative styles such as gothic, industrial, and tribal dance forms. An eclectic edgy dance group that will mesmerize and entertain.

We have experience performing as a group or individually in a range of styles including:

Egyptian:
An ancient dance form performed by women in the company of other women. Egyptian belly dance can be broken down into two main aspects.

Folkloric:
Based in the traditional folk dances of Egypt’s people which includes traditional costuming, music and storytelling. Our cane dances incorporate folkloric elements with modern interpretations.

Cabaret:
The most recognized form of belly dance, cabaret includes flashy costumes, fast movements and strong rhythms. Props such as veils, zills and swords are often included.

Tribal:
American Tribal Style (ATS) is a dance form based on incorporating folkloric and classic Egyptian with an emphasis on group improvisation. Although we do not dance ATS we do incorporate aspects of the tribal dance form into choreographies including movements, costuming and jewelry.

Fusion:
Is a dance that incorporates elements from other styles with traditional belly dance. Our fusion inspired dances often draw from an eclectic mix including Asian, Spanish, and pop culture music and costuming.

Gothic:
Gothic belly dance is an emerging fusion form that draws from the goth subculture with its musical and stylistic expression. The dance draws from elements of the darker side of life incorporating them with both cabaret and tribal styles. Most common are Victorian, punk and cyber/industrial costume designs combined with music ranging from romantic to post-punk that may or may not include Arabic rhythms.
